Leather Care Guide
Caring for Your Vernay Atelier Leather
Your Vernay Atelier piece is crafted to accompany you for years. With a little care, full-grain leather develops a rich patina and unique character over time. This guide explains how to clean, protect and store your bag so it ages beautifully.
1. Everyday Care
- Handle your bag with clean, dry hands whenever possible.
- Avoid prolonged contact with rough or abrasive surfaces that may scratch the leather.
- Rotate your bags if you carry them daily, allowing each piece to rest and recover its shape.
- Keep pens, liquids and cosmetics in pouches to prevent spills and ink marks inside the bag.
2. Regular Cleaning
For routine cleaning, less is more. Full-grain leather does not need frequent products, only gentle maintenance.
- Wipe the surface occasionally with a soft, dry or very lightly damp cloth to remove dust.
- If needed, use a slightly damp cloth with clean, lukewarm water. Do not soak the leather.
- Allow the bag to air dry naturally at room temperature, away from direct heat sources.
- Never use household cleaners, baby wipes, vinegar, alcohol or harsh chemicals on leather.
3. Conditioning the Leather
Over time, leather can benefit from light conditioning to maintain suppleness and prevent drying.
- Use a high-quality leather cream or conditioner suitable for full-grain leather.
- Test the product first on a small, inconspicuous area (such as the base) to check for colour changes.
- Apply a very thin layer with a soft cloth, using gentle circular motions.
- Allow the conditioner to absorb, then buff lightly with a clean cloth.
- Condition sparingly – usually once or twice a year is sufficient for normal use.
4. Water, Rain and Moisture
Leather is naturally resilient but not waterproof. It is normal for full-grain leather to show subtle water marks if exposed to heavy rain.
- If your bag becomes wet, blot (do not rub) the surface gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Stuff the interior with tissue paper to help the bag keep its shape while drying.
- Allow it to dry naturally at room temperature, away from direct heat or sunlight.
- Avoid hairdryers, radiators or placing the bag near open fires or heaters.
- You may use a dedicated leather protector spray if compatible with full-grain leather; always test first.
5. Sunlight, Heat and Humidity
- Avoid leaving your bag in direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause fading and drying.
- Do not store your bag in very hot, very cold or very humid environments.
- Keep away from radiators, car dashboards and enclosed, damp spaces such as cellars.
6. Storage Between Uses
Proper storage helps preserve the structure and finish of your Vernay Atelier piece.
- Empty the bag before storing it and gently shake out any dust or debris.
- Stuff the bag with acid-free tissue paper or a soft cotton cloth to maintain its shape.
- Store it in the original dust bag or a breathable cotton pouch – never in plastic.
- Keep it upright on a shelf, out of direct sunlight.
- Avoid hanging the bag by its straps for long periods, as this can distort the handles.
7. Stains and Marks
Stains are best treated as soon as possible. Always test any method on a hidden area first.
- Surface dirt: Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth and allow to dry naturally.
- Oil or grease: Blot carefully with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use water, as this can spread the mark. Over time, many light oil marks will blend into the patina.
- Ink: Ink is difficult to remove from leather. Do not attempt harsh cleaning. Contact a professional leather specialist as soon as possible.
- Coloured liquids: Gently blot (do not rub) the area. Seek advice from a leather care professional if the stain remains visible.
8. Colour Transfer
Colour transfer is a natural risk, especially with lighter leathers and dark clothing (such as new denim).
- Avoid prolonged friction between your bag and heavily dyed garments, especially when new.
- Be particularly cautious with light-coloured leather worn against dark jeans or coats.
- Colour transfer is usually not reversible and is not considered a manufacturing defect.
9. Hardware and Details
- Wipe metal hardware occasionally with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints and light marks.
- Avoid contact between hardware and perfumes, lotions or alcohol-based products.
- Take care not to overfill your bag, as this can strain zips, stitching and clasps.
10. What to Avoid
- Do not machine wash or submerge your bag in water.
- Do not use bleach, solvents, baby wipes, multi-surface cleaners or abrasive products.
- Do not apply shoe polish unless specifically designed for full-grain leather accessories.
- Do not store your bag in plastic or non-breathable covers.
- Do not dry leather with direct heat.
11. Professional Care
If your bag requires deeper cleaning, complex stain removal or structural repair, we recommend using a reputable leather care specialist. Professional services can often restore and refresh a cherished piece more safely than home methods.
